scrutiny over allegations of sex with a minor which he denies. meanwhile, trump's pick to head the defense department, pete hegseth, is pushing back on sexual assault allegations made against him. cbs' jarred hill joins us with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: the writing was on the wall with more than half a dozen senate republicans casting doubt on gaetz's confirmation. trump named pam bondi, who defended him during his first impeachment trial, as his new pick for ag just hours after gaetz dropped out. from matt gaetz to pam bondi, the former florida attorney general is now president-elect donald trump's new pick for u.s. attorney general after gaetz withdrew on thursday. >> i've got the sense that the process was going to be challenging. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that at least eight republican senators had planned to vote against confirming the former florida congressman amid questions about the house ethics committee investigation into allegations gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old.

gaetz denies all wrongdoing. >> i am proud to know donald. >> reporter: bondi is a longtime trump ally with two decades of experience as a prosecutor. meanwhile, yesterday on capitol hill, trump's pick for defense secretary, army vet and fox news host pete hegseth, met with gop senators to bolster his confirmation chances. his visit came as a police report from monterey, california, provided more details on a 2017 sexual assault allegation made against him. according to the report, the accuser referred to as jane doe recalls saying "no" several times while in a hotel room with hegseth. she says he prevented her from leaving. >> i was cleared. >> reporter: hegseth's attorney said the allegations are false. >> i don't think there's any way way you can say this was a sexual assault. >> a concerning allegation. >> reporter: the allegation setting up another potential split among senate republicans. some lawmakers have also raised

questions about whether hegseth is professionally qualified to run the department of defense, noting his lack of high-level security experience. the dod is the largest federal agency with millions of employees as well as more than $800 billion budget. it will be interesting to see how that process goes, as well. >> all right. lots to follow there. jarred hill, thank you. now to the stormy weather impacting tens of millions of americans from coast to coast. there is no relief from those dangerous conditions in northern california and the pacific northwest, while the drought-stricken northeast is getting much-needed rain and snow. cbs news meteorologist rob marciano reports from fortuna, california. >> reporter: relentless rain pummelling northern california, turning the normally sunny state into a soggy mess. streets are flooded, roads are closed, and highways are backed up as 911 calls are on the rise. >> on the fire side they saw about a 25% increase over the past two days.

>> reporter: in the city of eureka we rode along with police commander leonard lafrance. what kind of calls have you been getting since the storm? >> we're seeing issues with roadways, trees that are down in the roadway or debris in the roadway. >> reporter: pieces of the roof that came flying off. >> that is the roof. >> reporter: just north, powerful wind from the bomb cyclone tore the roof off this community center. volunteers laid down makeshift tarps to prevent more water from getting inside. >> we always think it's going to happen to somebody else and feel bad about it. suddenly it happens to you. >> reporter: tough? >> yeah. yeah. it's a lot to absorb. >> everything was just flying. >> reporter: in western wshington, crews are still removing trees that fell on top of homes brought down by the high winds. >> we watched this come through the kitchen. right at us. >> reporter: on the east coast, rain in new york city a welcome sight just days after a drought warning was declared for the first time in over 20 years.

and following weeks of wildfires, new jersey has lifted its statewide fire restrictions after a night of much-needed rain. >> finally the northeast will take every drop they can get. here in the west, we're waiting for the water hose to turn off. lighter than it has been all they now, but this river a mainstay river behind me, going to come up another 12 feet overnight into friday. that will bring it to major flood stage. another bomb cyclone, though not as bad as the last, will ride up the coastline. it will be winds over saturated soil. likely more trees coming down through friday. we don't expect much in the way of rain letting up until early saturday. rob marciano, cbs news, fortuna, california. for the first time in the war with ukraine russia has used a new type of hypersonic missile. multiple explosions were seen in the sky above the central ukrainian city of dnipro yesterday. russian president vladimir putin said the use of the new intermediate-range missile was in response to ukraine's use of longer range american and

british missiles that struck russia this week. russia told the u.s. about the launch ahead of time. big developments in the middle east now. strong reaction this morning after the international criminal court issued arrest warrants for israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and israel's former defense minister yoav gallant. the charges include crimes against humanity for using starvation as a method of warfare. netanyahu rejected those allegations calling them false and absurd. the white house says it fundamentally rejects this decision. an arrest warrant was also issued for hamas' military chief who israel claims it killed in an air strike, but hamas says never confirmed his death. cbs' elizabeth palmer with more on the ongoing crisis of getting food into gaza. >> reporter: for more than a year, hungry gazans have tried to rob food aid trucks. but now armed criminal gangs are

looting whole convoys. abu ahmad, whose identity we're protecting, was in the worst incident so far last saturday when more than 100 trucks were attacked. "they shot through the windows," he told cbs, "they'd kill any driver who couldn't stop." he said israeli tanks were nearby, and an israeli drone watched the whole thing. but israel's military says it is not responsible for protecting aid. israel's former prime minister, ehud olmert, disagrees. why isn't it happening? >> the israeli government doesn't want it to happen. they want to punish the palestinians. >> reporter: already the poorest gazans scavenge for food in garbage duchess, pitifully -- dumps, pitifully little aid is getting through israeli crossings. even that's being stolen at

in 2019 he told police two men assaulted him in downtown chicago, hitting him, yelling homophobic and racist slurs, and tossing a noose around his neck. he was indicted on disorderly conduct charges for allegedly staging the attack. charges were later dropped, but a special prosecutor filed new charges, and smollett was convicted. the supreme court ruled the special prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene after the initial charges were dropped. "the milwaukee journal-sentinel" reports wisconsin authorities say they received a video from a man who allegedly faked his own death. officials say they recently been in contact with ryan borgwardt. they know he's somewhere in eastern europe. investigators searched for his body after he disappeared kayaking in wisconsin. police say he told them how he faked his death so he could leave his wife and three children, but has no intention of returning home.

wolverine packing company, a distributor in detroit, shipped the tainted beef to restaurants across the country, sparking concern now that the products may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers right now. at least 15 people have been sickened so far. ahead of the holiday season, supermarkets are reporting an egg shortage amid a recent surge of the bird flu. since 2022 the bird flu has affected more than 108 million poultry in 48 states. due to a recent spike in the number of bird flu cases, supply has started to shrink, and prices are about to get even higher. the department of education has released its 2025-2026 free application for federal student aid or fafsa form. the department says it has been testing the more simplified form since october 1st, incorporating feedback from families and students after last year's botched rollout. the form can be found on line at studentaid.gov.
