Surgical practice offers scholarship

Ranch and Coast Plastic Surgery is holding a “Ranch and Coast Plastic Surgery National Scholarship Contest” for a $1,200 scholarship. Applicants are asked to write an essay on “How Does Rhinoplasty Enhance Other Facial Features?” Send submissions by email in PDF or Word document to scholarship@DrChasan.com, or mail to Ranch and Coast Plastic Surgery, 1431 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014. Application deadline is Dec. 15.

ENCINITAS

EUSD students address state water board

Seven fifth- and sixth-graders from schools in the Encinitas Union School District spoke at a recent meeting of the California State Water Resources Control Board in Sacramento. The school district received a $720,000 award from the state water board as part of their Drought Response Outreach Program for Schools. Under the supervision of these students, the district designed and built six water quality projects on five campuses. The goal was to reduce pollutants that drain from the campus, such as fertilizers from fields and oil from cars in the parking lots, before they reached local waterways. Kids Kaleidoscope awards presented

Escondido Art Association members, parents and students gathered recently for an awards ceremony and reception to honor the Kids Kaleidoscope art students at the Artists Gallery on Grand Avenue. The competition salutes artists ages 5 through 18. This season, 40 students took part in the competition. Austin Ngo, a freshman at Escondido High, won Best of Show. Other winners were: Elementary School — Chance Gomez, first; Luis Tellez, second; Elia Hediger, third; Mason Giron, honorable mention. Middle School — Kelsey Bernet, first; Sami Miller, second; Edger Bergstrom, third; Jaxon Brouwer, honorable mention. High School — Nickolas Brouwer, first; Ingyu Lee, second; Eugina Palen, third; Young He, honorable mention.

Teacher chosen for White House Institute

Megan Douglas, a curriculum writer for The Classical Academies, has been selected to attend the 2018 White House History Teacher Institute. Thousands of teachers nationwide applied and only 30 were chosen to attend the weeklong training in July at the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History in Washington, D.C. The institute will feature discussions with historians, local site visits, inquiry-based learning activities, and more to enhance classroom learning. Visit www.whitehousehistory.org.

Students win laptops in transit essay contest

The Metropolitan Transit System, Coca-Cola and the San Diego County Office of Education recently awarded 40 laptops to winners of their 2018 Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest. Any student enrolled in a San Diego County High School was eligible to apply by writing an essay on why people should choose public transit instead of driving a personal vehicle. OCEANSIDE

OHS show choir has top-notch season

The Oceanside High School “Soundwaves” received first place in every competition they attended this year, directed by Leah Ritt, with choreography by Dominic Matas, accompanied by Nova Charle and with creative design by Susia Ruddell. The 20-minute set of continuous singing and dancing tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The season overview of awards for the “Soundwaves” includes: first place and Musicianship Award, Tier IV Division, Burbank Blast Show Choir Competition; first place and Showmanship Award, Tier IV Division, Los Alamitos Xtravaganza Show Choir Competition; first place, Tier III Division, Vista Festival at the Moonlight; and first place, Overall Best Choir in All Divisions, plus Best Soloist, Kate Rocha, Music in the Parks.

VISTA

Vista cadet presented with medal

The San Diego Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812, recently presented an Air Force Junior ROTC medal, certificate and check to Cadet Staff Sgt. Amy Rodriguez, student at Vista High School. Chapter President Wanda Prosser made the presentation at the annual awards and review ceremony. Leadership, academics, physical fitness and military bearing qualified Rodriguez for the award. VID awards student contest winners

The Vista Irrigation District recently presented awards to three high school seniors and three fourth-grade students from the local community from two separate district-sponsored contests. Dylan Soto from Vista High School received first place for his entry in the district’s 2018 scholarship contest and was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Maggie Cincotta and Bryce Thayer, both of Mission Vista High School, were awarded $750 scholarships as runners-up. William Gimbel, a fourth-grade student from Tri-City Christian School, received first place and $100 for his entry in the 2018 Water Awareness Poster Contest. Andrea Mercado from Alamosa Park Elementary School received $50 for second place, and Arielle Nolan from Tri-City Christian School received $25 for third place. The poster contest, for fourth-graders, helps promote understanding of water issues in elementary schools. William’s poster will appear in the 2019 Water Awareness Calendar, which will be free at the district’s office in November 2018.
