Create your own DIY Taco Seasoning with this simple, flavorful blend of spices. This homemade taco mix combines chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, coriander, and a touch of cayenne for a perfect balance of heat and savory. Ideal for seasoning ground meats, veggies, soups and more.
Most packaged taco seasonings are filled with preservatives, artificial colors, too much salt, and other fillers that aren’t necessary. The advantage of making your own seasoning gives you control over the ingredients.
You can use chili powders of your choice, for example you can use chipotle or ancho or use a combination of peppers.
This recipe yields 10 tablespoons, it’s designed so you always have taco seasoning on hand. Two tablespoons of seasoning is equivalent to one store-bought seasoning packet.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- chili powder
- cumin powder
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- smoked paprika
- ground coriander
- dried oregano
- cayenne pepper
- sea salt
Step 1 : Combine
Place all of the measured ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until well combined.
Step 2 : Store
Store in an airtight glass container.
Ways To Use Your DIY Taco Seasoning
Taco Meat: For one pound of ground beef, chicken, turkey, or plant-based alternative add 2 tablespoons of this seasoning to cooked and drained meat. Taste and add more salt as needed. (2 tablespoons of this DIY seasoning is equivalent to one store bought taco seasoning packet.)
Soups and Stews: It makes a great addition to a pot of chili or bean soup or stew.
Beans: It’s great stirred into refried bean or any beans of your choice.
Veggies: Taste absolutely delicious on grilled or roasted veggies.
Variations
Spicy Version: Use more cayenne or other dried chili powders.
Mild Version: Omit the cayenne pepper for a mild spice.
Low-Sodium: Use less salt if you want a low-sodium version.
Saucy: To create a saucy consistency add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch to your seasoning mix.
Storing DIY Taco Seasoning
This taco seasoning is best stored in a glass airtight container for up to 6 months.
